MineFresh: High Performance Odor Control

Our MineFresh odor control technologies rely on polymeric materials to form a durable and efficient barrier on textile surfaces. They quickly and effectively capture specific odor molecules as they develop and further neutralize and eliminate these malodors from within the fibre interface.

Stay Fresh, Stay Confident with Our Odor Control Technologies for Apparel

MineFresh is our portfolio of non-antimicrobial odor control technologies, designed for apparel, including activewear.

What is it?

Our MineFresh portfolio of odor control technologies helps prevent odor formation in active-wear before it can develop.

How it Works

MineFresh works by breaking down, neutralizing, and eliminating body odor as it develops by forming a durable and efficient barrier on textile surfaces.

FAQ

What are Anti-Odor Technologies?

Anti-odor technologies refer to a range of advanced treatments and fabric innovations designed to prevent or neutralize unpleasant odors in textiles. These technologies are especially critical in performance apparel, activewear, footwear, and technical fabrics, where odor buildup can compromise comfort, hygiene, and product longevity.

How Do Odors Form in Textiles?

Odors in textiles are primarily caused by the accumulation of organic compounds released through sweat and environmental exposure. Among the most common odor-causing substances are:

  • Isovaleric Acid (IVA) – A pungent compound produced by the breakdown of sweat, particularly in the presence of skin bacteria.
  • Acetic Acid – A sharp-smelling acid that can result from perspiration and microbial activity.
  • Ammonia – Often associated with intense physical exertion, ammonia contributes to a sharp, acrid odor in fabrics.
  • Nonenal – A compound linked to aging and long-term wear, known for its greasy, musty scent.

These compounds can bind to textile fibers, especially synthetic materials, and persist even after washing.

How Anti-Odor Technologies Work

Modern anti-odor technologies are engineered to target and neutralize these odor-causing compounds before they accumulate or become noticeable. Depending on the formulation, these treatments may:

  • Absorb and trap volatile odor molecules
  • Break down odor compounds chemically
  • Prevent odor adhesion to fabric surfaces
  • Facilitate easier removal of odors during laundering

These technologies are often applied during the textile finishing process and are designed to be durable through multiple wash cycles, maintaining freshness over time.

Applications in Performance Textiles

Anti-odor treatments are widely used in:

  • Athletic wear and sportswear
  • Outdoor and hiking apparel
  • Military and tactical uniforms
  • Workwear and industrial garments
  • Footwear linings and socks

By integrating odor control at the fiber or fabric level, manufacturers can enhance wearer comfort, product appeal, and brand differentiation.

Which Test Methods are used to Assess Anti-Odor Performance?

Performance textiles—used in activewear, outdoor gear, and uniforms—are engineered to manage moisture, temperature, and odor. To validate odor control claims, manufacturers rely on specialized testing methods that simulate real-world conditions and measure odor suppression over time. Below are the most effective and widely accepted techniques:

1. Sensory Panel Testing for Textiles

Trained evaluators assess odor intensity on worn or treated textile samples. Garments are typically worn under controlled conditions (e.g., exercise protocols), then rated for odor presence and strength.

2.  Headspace Analysis

This method captures and analyzes volatile compounds emitted from textile samples after wear or exposure to odor sources. It helps quantify odor levels and monitor changes over time.

3. GC-MS for Textile VOC Profiling

Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry identifies odor-causing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from textiles. It provides a chemical fingerprint of odor emissions.

4. Real-Use Wear Trials

Garments are worn by volunteers during physical activity, then evaluated for odor retention and freshness. This method reflects actual consumer use.

5. Odor Retention and Release Testing

Textiles are exposed to standardized odorants (e.g., isovaleric acid, ammonia), then analyzed for how well they trap or neutralize odors. This is useful for comparing different fabric treatments.

What is the Difference between Anti-Odor vs. Antimicrobial?

When it comes to performance fabrics, understanding the difference between anti-odor and antimicrobial textile technologies is key to choosing the right technology.

Anti-odor treatments are designed to neutralize or absorb odor molecules caused by sweat.  These technologies often use natural or synthetic compounds to trap smells and keep fabrics smelling clean, even after extended wear.

Antimicrobial technologies, on the other hand, work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. Since bacteria are a primary source of odor, antimicrobial treated fabrics help reduce smells by targeting the bacteria. Common antimicrobial active ingredients include silver, zinc, and copper.

It’s important to understand the difference between antimicrobial and anti-odor textile technologies—not just in how they work, but also in how they’re regulated.

Antimicrobial treated textiles have technology added to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. As these treatments actively control microorganisms, they are considered pesticidal under and must be registered appropriately, if required, in each country that they are sold. For example, in the US, antimicrobials are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) In Canada, by Health Canada under the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) The Biocide Products Regulation, officially known as Regulation (EU) NO 528/2012 regulates Pesticidal products in the EU.

If the product is used in medical applications, it may also require FDA approval, for example.

In contrast, anti-odor technologies work by absorbing or neutralizing odor molecules.  These technologies do not eliminate microbes and are therefore not classified as pesticides. As a result, anti-odor finishes typically do not require EPA registration, faciliting smoother market integration and application across a wider range of consumer products.
