How it Works

What are Water Repellents?
Water repellents, by definition, are compounds with hydrophobic/oleophobic groups or hydrophobic/oleophobic groups and reactive groups. These compounds are used for water repellent technologies and are often added to textile applications to make them resistant to water penetration.
Why are Fluorine-Based Water Repellents Falling out of Favour?
Fluorocarbon-based technologies are more traditional and widely used for water-repellency. While these solutions are effective at providing water and oil resistance due to their low surface energy, they have raised significant environmental and health concerns. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals”, are particularly problematic due to their persistance in the environment and potential health risks.
What are the Alternatives and Challenges?
To address the environmental and health concerns with PFC’s, there has been a shift towards PFC free (fluorine-free) water repellent options. These alternatives aim to reduce environmental impact but they can also pose some challenges.
Reduced Performance: Fluorine-free water repellents may not always completely match the water and oil repellency of their fluorinated counterparts.
